Personally, I find it hard to set goals even though I have heard how important goal setting is. The truth is I am scared of writing what I want. I feared my written goals would mock me when not unachieved.
However, after listening to Brain Tracy’s the Power of Self-Discipline I challenged myself to write my goals for a week. My list was simple nothing ambitious. It included working on my thesis and a couple of other things. Things I would not be so sad about not achieving (lol).
At the end of the week, I realised I achieved my goals for the week. That was progress for me and ended the fear of goal setting.
This new year I have decided to be courageous and write more ‘ambitious’ goals for myself.
Most successful people set goals for themselves, Daymond John founder of clothing brand FUBU is one of them. He says “five days a week, I read my goals before I go to sleep and when I wake up. There are 10 goals around health, family and business with expiration dates and I update them every six months. I believe the last thing I read at night will likely manifest when I’m sleeping. You become what you think about the most”.
Daymond John is said to be worth $250 million.
When she first began her television career, Oprah established the goal of hosting a successful talk show for 20 years. She has achieved this goal and much more. Today, Oprah is not only one of the richest black women in America but also one of the richest people in the world.
“Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work.” Says Oprah.
So, fear not and see goal setting as an activity that will make you achieve meaningful things this year. Write your goals and start taking steps towards achieving them.
